I use the rear stand to fill oil. I fill to the middle level, start the engine for a minute and check, add, repeat if needed..

I usually do the change on a rear stand, then refill to the upper mark. It always drops down after starting the bike, especially on a bike where you can't prefill the oil filter. After a couple minutes sitting, I set the final level level, off the stand.

I've had some bikes* need much less than the stated amount (even after extended draining) and others needing more. It always make me think that I messed up somehow, but you can't go wrong by using the level marks.
