Just how restricted is the ZX-4R/RR ECU? An introspective Sneak Peek.

Unlikely - it's not like a word document where you can just copy/paste between ECUs to make ECU A do something ECU B does. I mean, yes, you could try it that way. But it likely won't work that for a myriad of reasons.

Additionally, there is no physical buttons on the clip ons to set cruise or adjust cruise speed up and down. Work would have to be done to see how they are addressing the buttons on the Z H2/ZX-10R with cruise and then try and mimic that with the current controls on the ZX-4R/RR. I'm guessing it would potentially be possible to change this but I'm also thinking that in order to do such a thing you're essentially robbing Peter to pay Paul. Meaning you'd have to eliminate three operations offered by the stock controls. So assuming we put the effort into making this happen and it actually worked and figured out how to re-address the stock controls (not guaranteed/given), you'd have to repurpose say the lap timer button as your cruise enable button and then perhaps repurpose the left signal slider for decrease cruise speed and then logically repurpose the right signal slider for increase cruise speed. Which then would effectively eliminate those buttons original functions. Alternatively, one could potentially add auxiliary buttons to accomplish such things, which then results in a bunch of extra code as well which requires spare room in the ECU ROM for that code and loads of testing and debugging to make sure it doesn't jack up other things along the way.

I have talked with our team in the past about potentially making a cruise function part of our race tools package on ETV equipped bikes, but the legal ramifications of someone say setting their cruise and then getting in an accident due to being distracted or something is kind of offputting. Would such a feature be possible to add to our Race Tools packages on ETV equipped bikes? More than likely. Could it be done? Probably. Should it be done? Ehhhh..... There are a lot of legal ramifications that could come back and bite you in the butt should someone hurt themselves using that functionality. And these days marking something as "Should only be used on closed-course, competition only purposes. Not for use on public streets." really isn't an effective CYA disclosure anymore.
I appreciate the detailed response, thank you. Another silly question I've always wondered... is it possible to change the startup animation or ui whatsoever or is that deeply locked out? I love the zx10r river mark logo startup
